A winter storm brought wintry precipitation to
the I-10 corridor on January 28 – 29 in 2014. Areas in the western Panhandle
saw snow, while locations near Tallahassee picked up on sleet and freezing
rain. The Jacksonville-area saw mostly just a cold rain; however, the close
proximity of the storm system forced local counties to take precautionary
efforts.
January 2014 was unusually cold for the East Coast. The prevailing northwesterly flow helped steer arctic air southward. A system with just enough moisture was able to move through the area and where temperatures were cold enough, frozen precipitation form. Even though some areas reported a “trace” of ice, several roadways were closed, including part of Interstate-10.
