The Nation Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) announced they have completed major upgrades to the GFS
Model. The upgrades should make the model accurate when forecasting large
weather events, such as hurricanes, snowstorms, and rainstorms.
“This
substantial upgrade to the GFS, along with ongoing upgrades to our
supercomputing capacity, demonstrates our commitment to advancing weather
forecasting to fulfill our mission of protecting life and property,” said Louis
W. Uccellini, Ph.D., director, NOAA’s National Weather Service.
The upgrades will help with
the upcoming forecasting tropical systems during the 2021 hurricane season. It is
the hope that the upgrades will prevent the model from developing “phantom
storms” as he often does weeks ahead of developing tropical systems.
