Difference Between Watch & Warning

When severe weather is anticipated the National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center issue severe weather watches and warnings ahead of the storms.

A WATCH means that the ingredients exist for severe storms to develop. You should prepare for the possibility of severe weather. There are 2 types of watch boxes that are issued by the Storm Prediction Center- a severe thunderstorm watch & a tornado watch. When either is issued, the watch box usually encompasses a large area and is in effect for several hours.

A WARNING means that a threat is imminent or is occurring. You should take action to prevent the loss of life and property. There are 2 types of warnings that are issued by the National Weather Service- a severe thunderstorm warning & a tornado warning. Both can are issued for a defined area where impacts are possible.
